This is such an important conversation to be having, and I feel relations (or lack of) with Indigenous people indicates who our leaders and governments are serving. As a Canadian, I often hear people refer to the problems occurring in the US and it makes them feel better about Canada. However the more I am learning about Canada's colonial past and how it is continuing today I feel as though we have a long way to go in dismantling colonial oppression. Canada prides itself on kindness and being "good people" yet through 2020 Canadian police forces have invaded sovereign nations (ex Wet'suwet'en and Six Nations). Our prime minister then does a photo op taking a knee at a racial justice protest, while simultaneously displacing first nations people from their homes in the name of corporations. I am very passionate about this topic, and am thankful for this space to respond. I highly recommend anyone who is looking for more information check out the Unist'ot'en Camp youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgfVO6U5QuA&t=2s and look up 1492 Land Back Lane to get a glimpse into the genocides and crimes against humanity Canada is currently committing.
